About us

Kilimanjaro, by any name, is a metaphor for the compelling beauty of East Africa. When you see it, you understand why. Not only is this the highest peak on the African continent; it is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland – elevation around 900 metres – to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336 feet).

Our passionate and highly trained Kilimanjaro staff totals 120 people, including lead guides, assistants guides, cooks and porters. All our guides and cooks began their careers on the mountain as porters.

Many of our lead guides have more than 9 years experience hiking Kilimanjaro, while most of our porters, assistant guides and cooks have been climbing Kilimanjaro for at least 5 years. Our lead guides and most assistant guides are Wilderness First Responder Certified. Many of our cooks and porters have first aid training.

For anyone interested in the natural world, exploring this mountain is fascinating. In a landscape formed by ice and fire, the ascent takes you from tropical rain forest to arctic conditions among the summit glaciers – contrasts that at sea level would be six thousand miles apart. On Kilimanjaro, you walk from equator to arctic in four days.

Getting Fit for Your Kilimanjaro Climb

Kilimanjaro is a strenuous adventure, but you don’t have to be an elite athlete. Anyone in good health, with a reasonable degree of physical conditioning and a determined attitude can make it to the top. No climbing skills are required. Even the most challenging portions are still a hike (a steep hike, but a hike nonetheless.) No ropes or technical gear are involved. It is recommended that you be able to jog for five miles or for 10,000 meters without difficulty. It is a good idea to have followed a regular routine of aerobic exercise at least four to six months before the trek. Determination is the critical factor.

Guides & Porters

Local Guides, Years of Experience, 98% Summit Success Rate.

Kilimanjaro guides all receive a licence to work on Kilimanjaro from the National Park. Without this they are unable to operate as guides. The licence is obtained after several years of experience of working on the mountain as porters or cooks then as assistant guides after which they attend courses in First Aid, Mountain Rescue, Flora and Fauna and History.

Our porters take care of you. So we take care of them.
